I work with the student to address areas of weakness within their current level. I use excerpts of textbooks, real life English materials, games, presentation practice. I work with the student to address areas of weakness within their current level. I use excerpts of textbooks, real life English materials, games, presentation practice. If the student needs work with pronunciation, I will work that into the lessons more and more over time. If they are willing to speed up the process, I can provide extra coursework, reading, listening activities. I have worked with students of all levels and ages. One adult wanted to understand The Economist, another wanted to understand Family Guy. We worked on areas of grammar, vocabulary and fluency while incorporating those interests as well. Another student needed to host an upcoming forum, so we role-played all of the characters that they would be interacting with through conversation, writing emails, replying to texts, solving issues over the phone. When it comes to tutoring, some students do best with a textbook, some do best with Family Guy. While I prepare as well as possible to keep classes fun and challenging; I have learned to be flexible. I would like to see my students advance quickly, even to the point that they no longer need me! I work with them to help them learn good habits outside of lessons. We talk about ways to immerse oneself in the language as much as possible. Then they return to me with some truly amazing questions, insights, and progress. An excellent lesson is when the student comes back full of questions about what they have learned on their own. It becomes more of a relay race, a passing of the baton, and it becomes a lot of fun.
